Despite being one of the most anticipated films of 2012, Prometheus was unable to defeat the family friendly Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. The animated sequel earned an estimated $60.4 million, making it the fourth highest debut of the year. This is slightly below Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa ($63.1 million), but it is still a very strong opening for an animated sequel. The film had the help of being the first family film of the summer and the first major animated film since The Lorax opened back in March.

Prometheus had to settle for second place, but it still managed an impressive debut of $50 million. If you consider the film to take place in the Alien universe, it is the highest opening for a film in that franchise, beating out Alien Vs. Predator ($38.3 million). This premiere makes it the 12th highest opening for an R rated film.

Snow White and the Huntsman did not hold well over it’s second weekend, dropping 59% to an estimated $23 million. MIB 3 earned $13.5 million, while The Avengers made $10.8 million. The real winner of the weekend, however, was Moonrise Kingdom. The film managed to crack the top ten and earned an estimated $1.6 million at just 96 theaters.
