Oh, Hollywood. When will you ever learn? You would think that after this year’s Battleship flopped at the box office, it would be a long time before we see another movie based on a toy or board game. Unfortunately, Hasbro is collaborating with Sony pictures to produce a movie based on Tonka Trucks. It is also being produced by Adam Sandler’s production company Happy Madison Productions. Here is what Bob Osher, the president of Sony Pictures Digital Productions, had to say regarding the film:

“In its 65 years, Tonka has become more than a toy or a brand; Tonka trucks are a rite of passage for kids all around the world… Time spent with these toys creates memories that last a lifetime as kids are inspired to play using the boundaries of their imagination. We look forward to creating a family-friendly motion picture that brings the Tonka experience to life.”

He makes it sound like every kid for generation has played with these things but, for the life of me, I can’t remember even owning one of them. Apparently the film will be CG-animated and the script is being written by Fred Wolf (Grown Ups). Adam Sandler is set to produce the film, but he has not stated whether he will use his voice in the project. Either way, this appears to be an obvious cash grab and, so far, there is very little talent working behind the camera. It would be unfair to write this movie off just yet, so let’s just say that my expectations are very, very low.
